Seawall Repair vs Replacement: How to Know Which You Need

January 26, 2026 Deep Blue Builders Expert reviewed

Your seawall takes the punishment that your house and yard never see. It absorbs wave action, holds back soil, and stands between your property and the water. When it starts to fail, the biggest question is simple: repair it, or replace it?

Read the warning signs

Some signs are cosmetic. Some are structural. The ones to take seriously include:

  • Cracks that run through the wall or cap
  • A wall that leans toward the water
  • Soil washing out or sinking behind the wall
  • Water seeping or weeping through the face
  • Rebar visible at cracks or the top edge

If you notice any of these, an inspection now is far cheaper than a failure after the next storm.

When repair is the right call

Repair makes sense when the wall is structurally sound but shows localized damage. A section of failing facing, a cracked cap, or a few compromised panels can often be restored at a fraction of replacement cost.

Batter piles are a common repair technique. We drive angled piles to brace a wall that has begun to lean. Done early enough, this can add years of service to a wall that might otherwise need replacing.

When replacement is smarter

We recommend replacement when the wall has lost its structural integrity. A wall that has moved significantly, has severe corrosion, or is bulging in multiple sections is usually beyond an affordable repair.

Sometimes replacing is the better financial choice even when a repair is possible. If you plan to stay in the home for years, a new engineered wall protects your property and holds its value far better than a patched one.

How we decide

We start with a real inspection, not a guess. We look at the soil side and the water side, check the wall for movement, and evaluate the material's condition. Then we give you an honest recommendation with the numbers behind it.
